WORLD MENTAL HEALTH DAY

October 10 is World Mental Health Day. The overall objective is to raise awareness of mental health issues around the world. 🧠

Stigma associated with mental health is often reported as the main reason that people avoid seeking or delaying treatment. I believe destigmatizing mental health is a critical aspect in making improvements in mental health care.  Here are 5 ways you can help to destigmatize mental health.

1. Talk about it

Get comfortable talking about your own mental health journey.  Sharing your own experience will encourage others to do the same.

2. Educate yourself

Actively take the time to educate yourself on mental health.  Read up on the early warning signs, how to support others and the available local resources.

3. Reinforce a message of equivalence between physical and mental health

Challenge yourself and others to see taking care of one’s mental health as the same as taking care of one’s physical health.Reinforcing the message that taking care of both is critical for our overall wellbeing.

4. Demonstrate compassion and empathy

Be kind and considerate when it comes to discussing mental health concerns.  Come from a place of love and encouragement, reflecting what you see and hear, and avoid judgment or criticism.

5. Don’t shame those with mental health issues

Mental health is no joke, so avoid making any derogatory comments about mental health.  Regardless of the situation limit the use of words such as ‘crazy’ or ‘insane’, and never dismiss or make light of someone’s mental health struggles.
